Read Why Larissa Adam, a Longtime Oakland Educator, Supports Huber Trenado

UPDATE: With 29 out of 29 precincts reporting and rank choice voting, Huber Trenado received 35.64 percent of the vote and Rosie Torres 37.50 percent of the vote.  We appreciate Huber’s dedication and willingness to serve and know that he will continue to be a partner in the work to ensure all students receive a high quality education. Huber has been endorsed by the East Bay Times. Read about the endorsement here.

I first met Huber Trenado when he walked into my fourth grade class at Manzanita Elementary nearly two decades ago. It didn’t take me long to see that Huber had a passion not only for learning about social justice but for enacting it. Now, Huber wants to bring that passion to guiding the Oakland public schools, where he got his education, by running for school board.

As his former teacher, I am so incredibly proud to let you know that the families, educators, and community members who make up the GO Public Schools Oakland Advocates’ coalition have chosen to endorse Huber Trenado in the District 5 Oakland school board race.

My name is Larissa Adam, and I have been an Oakland educator for close to 25 years. As someone devoted to our Oakland community and our schools, I know that Huber will provide the leadership and experience that families, students, and educators need in District 5. He was raised in the Fruitvale and will provide the school board with a unique perspective as a former Oakland Unified student and an Oakland teacher at Lazear.

As a student and teacher, Huber has used a solutions-oriented approach to bring communities together on a number of levels. Here are examples that resonate with me:

  • As a senior at Metwest, he recognized how powerful teachers are as leaders in the Oakland community and organized a seminar on home-buying tips to help more teachers buy homes in our communities and stay teaching in our city.
  • When Huber saw a need for summer enrichment for his students, he founded an East Oakland Aim High program to close the achievement gap and stop “summer slide” for his students, and many others.
  • In his work at Lazear, Huber has shown leadership and thought partnership in representing his colleagues on our compensation and teacher evaluation working groups.

Huber has always demonstrated a profound sense of responsibility for his education, family, and now for his students. He is a listener and bridge builder, and will help different stakeholder groups understand the perspectives of teachers and students in Oakland.

Huber is committed to Oakland’s mission to ensure that there are quality schools in every neighborhood – especially in our most underserved communities. He has experience with both district-run and charter schools and will be a champion for collaboration and solidarity to benefit our children. Finally, Huber will be a powerful voice for our students. He grew up in our public schools and will use his experiences and perspective to assist more of our children to succeed in college and beyond.

I know Huber will represent not only our students in District 5 well, but he will work to ensure that all of our students succeed. I hope you will join me and the rest of the GO community in supporting Huber and by voting for him on November 8th.

Thank you,
Larissa Adam
