We have decided to make no endorsement in District 6. GO’s endorsement process involved nearly 100 community members participating in a candidate interview day, where we were able to hear from the candidates on a number of issues affecting our students and then provide feedback that was used for the endorsements. We heard from 2 candidates running for District 6 school board that day, and incumbent Shanthi Gonzales did not join the interview day. Since then, Director Gonzales is the only candidate who has qualified for the ballot and will face write-in challenger Anthony Wilson.
In less than 70 days, voters in Oakland will have the opportunity to determine 3 of the 7 seats on the Oakland Unified School Board.
In District 4, we are proud to endorse Dr. Gary Yee. As a former Oakland teacher, principal, Board Member, and Superintendent, Dr. Yee has demonstrated the commitment and leadership that OUSD needs during this critical time.
This past Sunday, August 5, GO hosted a critical event that comes around once every election cycle—school board candidate interviews. Nearly 100 Oaklanders, including parents, teachers, and community leaders, gathered in the GO offices, where they had a chance to meet and hear from candidates from Districts 2, 4, and 6. After getting to know these candidates, those in attendance were given the chance to weigh in on who GO should endorse.
